5 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Operates as advertised. Surprisingly fast for an Atom processor. You tube and all internet related applications have worked flawlessly

Cons: The mouse cursor does not have an switch off button, so as you type, if the palm of your hand even barely touches the pad it will start typing where ever the cursor is. I used an Acer netbook with a cursor switch off button that was very handy. The power brick also gets ridiculously hot. Not enough to burn little kids, but it is warm enough that it could discolor wood if left sitting on it long enough.

Other Thoughts: It actually does internet functions (e-mail, surfing, facebook) better than I expected straight out of the box. I have a 2 gig memory stick and an SSD shipping out today that I am actually contemplating on sending back. I will have to wait and see how Office 2010 runs before making the final decision

4 out of 5 eggsNice Upgrade

Pros: The dual core processor makes a huge difference. Runs Ubuntu 11.10 well. The keyboard is reasonably sized for a netbook. Very sleek looking. Quiet under load. HDMI port. Great for class notes, presentations, Hulu on the go.

Cons: Hard drive access is terrible. I had an OCZ Vertex from my previous ASUS 900HA that is now in this netbook. On the 900HA, 4 screws gave you access to the hard drive. Doing this now requires stopping short of dismantling the entire netbook. You also have to break a seal that voids the warranty. ASUS advertises something like 9 hours of battery life, but I've only ever seen 4:30. Perhaps that's the hybrid engine... I would have preferred a better screen resolution, but whatever.

Other Thoughts: Coming from a 900HA, I'm very impressed with performance. I didn't actually try the Windows 7 Starter, rather the moment I got it in the mail, I swapped hard drives. My friend has a netbook with it, and it seems terrible. Despite the pain involved with changing drives, it's a rocket with an SSD. I can't really comment on the ION gpu, although it looks decent in specs for the type of gpu it is. This is the 3rd ASUS laptop/netbook I've owned (900HA, G51JX-X3, this), and I am very pleased with the company as a whole.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little netbook

Pros: Superb netbook! I love the EEE line, and this one is just great. Dual-core atom helps boost performance, especially with things like video playback. Plus with hyperthreading, it makes it seem like there are 4 cores. I like showing that off to my friends. =P

Amazing battery life! With the 63WH battery, I can literally get 8 hours of battery life out of this thing, WiFi on. I use it in college every day, and I don't need to bring the power cord with me.

Linux compatibility. All the hardware has Linux drivers available. The Broadcom wifi chipset gave me issues at first, but rpmfusion solved that. Webcam, sound and video work flawlessly.

Webcam cover. This is just a little nicety. I usually just cover the webcam on a laptop with a piece of electrical tape, but this is much more elegant.

The keyboard is nice to type on. There's space between each key, so mashing two keys at one is hard. My hands are fairly large, too, but typing is fine.

SD card reader is a bonus.

Cons: Win7 starter. This is just a joke. I used it for about 2.3 seconds, got fed up and installed Linux instead (Fedora, XFCE spin).

1GiB of RAM. This is just not enough. I happened to have a 2GiB stick laying around, so the upgrade was fairly easy. Only 1 SODIMM slot, though.

Getting to the hard drive is a royal pain. You have to take the keyboard off, pop the upper half of the case off (held with tabs(!), not screws) and disconnect two ribbon cables to get to the HD. This is just ridiculous. Put an access panel on the bottom, Asus!

Getting the screen apart is a similar challenge, though replacing a smashed LCD panel yourself is possible (just difficult).

Can't boot to SD card.

Other Thoughts: Just to note, I actually own the 1015PEM. It's the same exact computer except the PEM has Intel GMA graphics instead of the NVidia graphics. I can't speak to that difference, but unfortunately Newegg has discontinued stocking the PEM. I therefore decided to post my review here so that people will actually read it.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat Netbook, needs a RAM upgrade

Pros: It's a great lil net book. Small. Portable. Works great. The only netbook I could find with a decent graphic card. It was the one true selling point.

Long battery life.

I'm a network tech, so it's great for service jobs where I sometimes spend hours trouble shooting switches, vlans, and firewalls.

Also great for traveling when I'm on the road.

Cons: Sometimes a little too small. You may want to consider getting the 1215 instead. Just an after thought.

Biggest CON on this one is trying to upgrade it's RAM. It's the only reason I didn't give it 5 eggs. ASUS needs to upgrade the bios to support more then just 2 brand names. I couldn't even find the right ram available for purchase anywhere I normally shop. So instead I bought corsair thinking surely it'd be supported. NOPE!

I was gonna try using it for some games if I could just upgrade the RAM.

Other Thoughts: Every motherboard I've bought has been from ASUS. And this netbook is great. Normally I'm a big supporter of ASUS. But why even bother selling anything with just 1 gig of ram. That's just stupid. 1 gig barely runs windows, let alone other apps. ASUS really let me down on this one.

UPDATE THE BIOS ASUS!!! STOP SLACKING OFF!!! It's the only thing stopping this from being an awesome product.

5 out of 5 eggsEee PC 1015PN-PU17

Pros: Fast computer for its size and price! Boots quick (less than 1 minute), does great with internet browsing, and plays streaming video well. I haven't tested the wireless range, but it gets a good, clear signal from any point at home or in a hotel room. And with the NVidia Ion graphics, I can smoothly play 3D games on reduced settings. It's extremely quiet even under load, and the battery life is good. I can get about 5 hours with Ion active, which is how I usually keep it. It also has a nice screen even if it is small, and the sound quality through headphones or a stereo system is good.

Cons: A little bit difficult to get the RAM cover off, but that's hardly a big deal. It does need an extra gigabyte to work at its full potential, and it can't really do a lot more than internet browsing without it. Some of the pre-installed programs were a little annoying, but it's easy enough to disable or remove them. Took a day or two to get all the Windows updates installed (including SP1).

Other Thoughts: I got this as a gift. It really does need its maximum 2GBs of RAM, but that's only an extra $20. As for Windows 7 Starter, there's only one true con I would give it. It has no software for DVD playback. Fortunately, I happen to have a copy of Cyberlink DVD Suite that came with a DVD burner for my desktop computer. I plugged in my Asus external DVD player, installed Cyberlink, and the DVD playback is wonderful! The rest of the little things that people make such a fuss about with Starter are minor annoyances that are unnecessary for a netbook.

I'm overall very happy with this wonderful little thing!!

5 out of 5 eggsASUS makes AWESOME Computer

Pros: ASUS is the maker for my computers. with dual-core, it really does multi-taksing. The default is 1gb memory and it works okay. this is by far the better netbooks I had and I got it for $300 from newegg where regular price is 450. keyboard is very comfy

Cons: finger prints all over the place. Power button is so weird and I have to press hard to turn it on. it is pain in the but! to upgrade memory b/c it is very hard to remove the plastic cover from the bottom of the netbook.

Other Thoughts: if you are surfing the web and watch some movies HD or not, it does it for you. Window 7 Starter is NOT so bad after use.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes what it says it can do

Pros: It's small, the battery lasts longer than I can use it on a day to day basis (+10 hours without ION), and it can play nice, crisp videos on my HDMI TV.

The keyboard is raised and low in profile. There's plenty of USB ports and the screen is bright. It boots quickly and runs quiet. It also has a HDMI port!

There's just about as much pre-installed software as any ASUS netbook on this, such as an anti-virus trial, some network-based services provided courtesy of ASUS, and a few URL shortcuts to popular websites (that probably paid to have their URL on there so that your netbook is even cheaper); all of which can be removed/ignored in a few minutes at most.

The netbook CAN switch to resolutions that aren't recommended for its screen, such as 1024x768. This is very helpful for me as photoshop will not even install unless the screen is at least 1024x768 (but it will run at 1024x600 without complaints).

Cons: It's a little tough to get a good grip on the outer case if your skin is dry.

The keyboard is not as responsive as I hoped: sometimes I doesn't register the keys I press until I'm really poking firmly at the key.

For some reason, pressing page-up makes the browser go back a page in Firefox 4 and it's driving me half nuts. As a result, I'm teaching myself to use gestures instead.

You have to reboot the computer to switch between the integrated graphics chip and the NVIDIA ION. The netbook blows a lot of hot hair out on left side when in ION mode, even if you aren't watching any movies. Battery life is also cut in half or more.

Even with NVIDIA ION, HD movies (1080p / full length movie about 4GB big) would not play on it directly out of the box. I had to install CCCP with MPC-HD and tweak it a little to get things to run smoothly.

The hard drive makes the dreadful CLICKCLICK noise once in a while but it doesn't seem to effect performance.

Finally, I don't like blue.

Other Thoughts: It was fun to be able to watch things on the big TV with this netbook thanks to its HDMI port, but the sound from it is still only 2.1 at best (with external speakers).

It would be nice if there was a way to plug a 5.1 or 7.1 sound system to the netbook. (USB controlled speaker set?)

My last ASUS netbook came with an ASUS software to change the wallpaper, but this one doesn't seem to be the case.

It would be nice if the netbook could change between the regular graphics chip and ION without rebooting, but I understand why it has to.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Netbook

Pros: Great features
Simple to upgrade RAM
Very nice battery life
Pretty fast for what it is
W7 Starter version not so bad after using it

Cons: Can't change hard drive
Glossy bezel is dust/fingerprint/scratch magnet
Does get uncomfortable hot after a short amount of usage
Usual load of bloatware installed
Nvidia Optimus can't be used with W7 Starter

Other Thoughts: This is a very nice system and I'm happy to have bought it.

I especially enjoy having the HDMI 1080P video ability, as well as extended battery life with Intel's graphics (great if you just want to watch a non-HD movie or listen to music, browse the web, etc.)

However, my two biggest gripes concern the hard drive and the bezel. For whatever reason, ASUS doesn't allow end-users to swap out the drive. So no SSD. And the bezel is glossy black. Now after I cleaned it, it's full of scratches. Ugh.

However, I think the system is pretty darn cool to be honest. My mom's already considering switching from her little "AiP" to one of these. I'm sorry but I don't believe netbooks are going away anytime soon.

So if you do decide on a netbook, you won't go wrong with this one.

4 out of 5 eggsNot too shabby

Pros: One of the pros about this netbook is definitely the matte blue color and the matte screen which helps you see in sunlight. The build quality and craftsmanship is also top-notch. For a netbook, it is actually quite fast probably due to the dual-core processor. The screen is nice and vivid. I also like the fact that it has built-in bluetooth and a hdmi port, which a lot of machines in this price-range do not offer. The size and weight and materials used to build this thing are top-notch as I noted before (I love the blue color).

Cons: The only two gripes I have with this machine is the fact that the keyboard (especially the space-bar) are quite noisy and the fact that the machine came way too over-packed with useless software that took a while to remove.

Other Thoughts: Whoevers in the market for a netbook, shell out the extra $50-75 for this baby rather than buying something with no bluetooth, hdmi, and a single-core cpu.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little Netbook

Pros: Very Small and very powerful for a Netbook. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit right away. I have ran Solidworks 2011 on it and it was still very usable. Watched 1080p movie through the HDMI port and it performed very well. I am very pleased with my purchased.

Cons: The outside of the case shows finger prints very easily. I have no complains hardware wise. I would say that Windows Starter is a complaint. Reduce the price some and have no OS.

Other Thoughts: I still get ~5 hrs of use with the ION graphics turned on and I haven't felt a need to run at a lower resolution to extend the battery. Newegg was great as usual. Before I bought this Netbook I was looking at getting an Android based tablet. For the money this is a much better option. Cheaper with better hardware capability.
